Promising young programmers... and they're only in Grade 5!

You would be forgiven for thinking that I probably made a typing error in the title of this post. How could Grade 5 students possibly be programming? They're just too young! Or so we thought. Our ICT teacher, Ms Cornelius, decided to give it a try anyway after she read about a free software tool called Scratch.

Creating online posters with Glogster

Our Science teacher, Ms Wallace, recently came across a useful site called Glogster which allows you to create posters online. She says:

"As we are trying to make our projects more innovative (and environmentally friendly), it is a space where you create a poster which can have song or animation.  You can then download them or vote for the best online. There are lots of examples there as well. (And just think...you won’t have to carry those A1 posters home!)"

Using Mouse Mischief in the classroom

We recently piloted a free software tool called Microsoft Mouse Mischief. Mouse Mischief integrates into Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and 2010, enabling teachers to insert multiple choice questions, polls, and drawing activity slides into their lessons. Students can actively participate in these lessons by using their own mice to click, circle, cross out or draw answers on the screen.

Students design HIV Aids Awareness Campaign using MovieMaker

Grade 8 Science students were asked to create an HIV Aids Awareness campaign using Microsoft Movie Maker. The goal of the campaign was to educate their audience on the nature and common misconceptions surrounding this epidemic.

One of the outstanding submissions was entitled 'Nandi's Story' and it tells the heartbreaking story of a teenage girl diagnosed with HIV Aids.

Prep School Intranet ('SchoolZone') now live

We are pleased to announce that the Preparatory School intranet (SchoolZone) was launched at the end of Term 2 for Grade 4-7. Classroom resources such as term calendars, homework, important announcements and online discussions are just some of the exciting new features on offer. The intranet has been developed using Microsoft SharePoint technology. Need help logging in?
